6 Things to Order off a German Menu

Over the years on this channel, I’ve had a LOT of German dishes. Some I absolutely adored, some that I would say…stumped me, and everything in between. But when it came to ordering at a German restaurant, my mind immediately just went to sausages, pretzels and beer. And while those things are all delicious, I knew there had to be so much more that a German menu had to offer. So with the help of my German subscribers, I ordered from a local German restaurant here in NYC using their recommendations. Check out what they said, it may surprise you!

1. Käsespätzle (Oven-Baked German Pasta)

“This is a very typical, very Southern German type of dish. Functionally, it’s like a German version of mac and cheese.” – Andreas

“It’s absolutely warm and comforting.” – Gloria

2. Kartoffelpuffer (Potato Pancakes)

“They’re quite a lot of effort to make, but if I can get them at a restaurant I really like ordering them because they taste great and they’re one of my favorites.” – Annika

3. Marinierter Herring (Marinated Herring)

“Fish in general is something you will find in the north of the country. Marinating the herring makes the meat quite soft and I think it’s very refreshing. It’s, in my opinion, one of the best things that can happen to a herring.” – Annika

4. Weisswurst with Pretzel (White Sausages)

“The way this particular meal works is the textural differences between the very soft, very mild, very tasty veal sausage and the mustard and the pretzel. This is the ideal combination.” Andreas

5. Sauerbraten (Beef in Sweet & Sour Gravy)

“It’s one of my ultimate winter comfort dishes.” – Gloria

“I used to eat this as a kid all the time, it was a special thing once a week. It’s not really something that I associate with other countries. To me, this is a German thing and a German thing that I love.” – Andreas

6. Apfelstrudel (German Apple Strudel)

“For me, this is more like a stand-in for all the apple pies and cakes that we have in Germany. It would be something that you would quickly make when someone comes around for coffee and cake; coffee and cake is like the ultimate German thing to do.” – Gloria

Surprising right?  I certainly learned so much more than I ever expected through ordering off a German restaurant menu, with some major help of course! My subscribers also recommended Gebackener Camembert (Baked Camembert Cheese), Leberknödelsuppe (Liver Dumplings in Soup), Rote-Beete-Salat (Red Beet Salad), Kassler Rippchen (Brined & Smoked Pork Chops), and Beef Gulasch (Beef Braised in Paprika Sauce). So next time you’re having a delivery night, why not give German food a try? You won’t be disappointed!
