7 Things to Order off a Georgian Menu

Georgia is a small country located in eastern Europe and boarders on the Black Sea. Now, I’ve eaten some Georgian foods before like khachapuri (the famous boat-shaped bread filled with cheese and sometimes egg) and khinkali (the best dumplings I’ve ever had). But I knew there had to be more to Georgian cuisine that I was missing out on. With the help of three of my subscribers of Georgian background, I was able to order like a local and get an authentic taste of Georgia. Read on to see what they said. Some of these recommendations may surprise you, I know they surprised me!

1. Pkhali (Vegetable spreads with walnut paste, onion, garlic, & coriander)

“They’re very savory, they’re very rich because of the walnut, and they’re very satisfying.” – Marianna

2. Adjapsandali (Mashed eggplant, tomato, & bell pepper)

“I prefer it cold. It’s my favorite dish. It reminds me of childhood; those summers in the countryside when we would play all day and come back and Grandma would have made a big pot. ” – Anna

3. Imeruli Khachapuri (Bread stuffed with cheese)

“You would be hard pressed to find a Georgian table without Khachapuri on it. Each region has their own version. Imeruli is meant to be shared.” – Niko

4. Lobio (Bean stew with corn cakes and fermented vegetables)

“It always comforts me. It’s something that I enjoy eating if I’m under the weather or just on a cold day.” – Marianna

5. Megruli Kharcho (Chicken in walnut sauce with saffron, garlic, & spices served with grilled grits)

“This is probably one of my favorite dishes in Georgian cuisine. Usually you have this in a restaurant. The walnut sauce alone takes a lot of time, it’s not an easy thing to make.” – Niko

6. Pork Mtsvadi (Marinated pork skewers with Tkemali [plum sauce])

“It’s another Georgian staple. It sounds simple, but it just doesn’t taste like any other pork dish that you’ve ever had.”  – Niko

7. Pelamushi (Sweet grape pudding)

“It’s very tart. It’s not too sweet, but it’s sweet enough to satisfy that sweet craving. And it’s a lovely way to end the meal.” – Marianna

And that’s not all! My subscribers had a few more yummy recommendations like: Georgian Salad, Kubdari (bread stuffed with spiced beef and pork, onion and garlic), and Honey Cake. I certainly discovered some new favorite foods doing this episode. So if you have the opportunity to try Georgian food, use this article to guide your way!
