Nigerian chicken stew with rice
SOMALIA
I’m rounding off my latest series on mangoes with a truly delicious mango delicacy. This Somali Mango Milkshake is exactly what you want in a milkshake and then some. It’s creamy, sweet, and completely refreshing. Plus, it uses just a few ingredients, and takes just a few minutes to create. It doesn’t get much better than that!
This mango milkshake is courtesy of Maymum Abukar, who currently lives in Canada, but is originally from Somalia. For Maymum, these mango milkshakes are reminiscent of joyful times with her family. Her older sister would often prepare a batch of the milkshakes for Ramadan, where her family would use the milkshakes to break fast together. However, Maymum and her family would also have these milkshakes to cool down in the summer or to treat themselves after a savory lunch or dinner.
This Somali Mango Milkshake just happens to be the first Somalian recipe we’ve had on the show and that feels particularly fitting. Mangoes are one of the most popular fruits in Somalia and can be found throughout Somalian cuisine. And this mango milkshake definitely makes me excited to try more Somalian dishes.
When it comes to Maymum’s Somali Mango Milkshakes, you’ll only need mangoes, milk, ice cream, and a pinch of salt. It truly can’t get any easier. You can opt for either fresh mangoes or canned mango puree, depending on the season or your ability to get your hands on fresh mangoes. I personally went with mango puree to make life easier and the milkshake was still phenomenal. As for the ice cream, you can choose traditional vanilla or try out butterscotch for a fun twist.
Speaking of twists: Maymum also recommended two slight variations to take this milkshake to the next level. For even more fruit flavor, layer a bit of strawberry jam at the bottom of your shake or add in a dash of cardamom to the mixture. Or hey, you can even try out both if you feel like it – Neither Maymum nor I will stop you.
This summer, you can sit back, relax, and sip the sweet flavors of Somalia with Maymum’s Somali Mango Milkshake.
