Creamed Peas & Potatoes
Peas in White Gravy Over Potatoes
USA
Sweet tea is a delicacy in the southern regions of the United States. In my “How the World Drinks Black Tea” episode, I couldn’t resist including this version of sweet black tea. Although it doesn’t have an official name, we’ll call it Bryanna’s grandma’s sweet tea, as it was created by a woman with exquisite taste!
Bryanna was kind enough to share Bryanna’s grandma’s sweet tea recipe with us, which is such a selfless thing to do considering the intimacy of certain recipes! Many thanks to you, Bryanna. Bryanna lives in New York, but she is originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During her childhood, her grandmother would primarily brew black tea due to its similarity in strength to coffee. Once she brewed the tea, she would then add evaporated milk until the mixture turned a creamy tan color. From here, she’d sweeten it with honey to taste and finish it off with a dash of nutmeg.
This drink feels very personal; enjoying the creamy, sweet, and bitter elements was an adventure. In addition, the nutmeg adds an extra touch that’s different from most things. Bryanna shares with us that she would sit with her grandmother and enjoy this tea alongside pan-fried biscuits and fig jam. She urges you to relax, look out the window, and take time to appreciate the small things in life as you sip on her grandmother’s sweet tea.
This recipe is a beautiful sentiment as well as a delicious treat. It smells comforting, like a rainy, foggy day. I particularly enjoyed the combination of evaporated milk and honey, and the nutmeg reminded me of mulled wine. Bryanna’s grandma’s sweet tea is a cozy fare, and it’s easy to make on a lazy night!
I hope you slow down, smell the roses, and try this sweet black tea recipe. Let me and Bryanna know what you think!
