London Fog
An English tea and Italian method combine to make something entirely Canadian
CANADA
The London Fog is an Earl Grey tea latte that’s creamy, lightly sweetened, and just straight-up delicious. It’s the perfect cozy and comforting beverage.
I first learned about this tasty drink from Jacob, who is from Ontario, Canada. To him, the London Fog represents the diverse cultural influences that make up Canadian cuisine and identity. As Jacob explained, you’ve got an iconic British tea combined with the Italian technique of frothing milk, plus a touch of Mexican vanilla extract. It brings together different global flavors and traditions into one mug.
To make a London Fog, you start by steeping Earl Grey tea. Once brewed, you froth it with steamed milk, a bit of vanilla, and sweetener like sugar or honey. Jacob mentioned you can get creative and use different types of tea to make new variations. Like matcha green tea for a Tokyo Fog or rooibos for a Cape Town Fog.
For my version, I didn’t have a milk frother, so I had to get resourceful. I just vigorously shook the tea and milk together in a mason jar to froth it up. Easy peasy!
One sip and I was an instant London Fog fan. The bright, citrusy bergamot notes from the Earl Grey paired so beautifully with the mellow, sweet vanilla. It had such a luscious and creamy texture, but still felt light and refreshing. The balance was perfection.
If you’re a tea lover and haven’t tried a London Fog, you should give it a go. It’s so simple but also feels like such a special little treat. I can definitely get behind this tasty east-meets-west beverage! It’s the perfect cozy tea latte.
