Flat White

AUSTRALIA

A true Aussie coffee shop classic

The flat white is a classic Australian coffee that exemplifies simplicity and quality. This simple yet sophisticated drink consists of a shot of espresso topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of microfoam. Unlike its cousins, the cappuccino and latte, the flat white keeps things minimal, allowing the true flavors of the coffee to shine through.

Macy, a viewer from Sydney, Australia, shared her love for this Aussie brew. She explained that enjoying this brew is a ritual she shares with her dad, as well as touring cafes to find the best cup in town. Macy appreciates how the flat white showcases the nuances of different coffee beans. She notes that it’s a staple in Australian cafes, often paired with a classic bacon and egg roll for breakfast.

Making a flat white at home is straightforward, but it does require some finesse. Start by frothing about half a cup of milk, aiming for very fine bubbles and a temperature around 160°F. While the milk is frothing, make a shot of espresso. Pour the espresso into your cup first, then add the frothed milk. The goal is to have just a thin layer of microfoam on top.

This flat white tastes great! It’s like the Goldilocks of coffee drinks – not too milky, not too strong, but just right. The balance between the espresso and the milk is spot-on, allowing you to really taste the coffee without being overwhelmed. I can see why Macy and her dad make a ritual out of it. While my milk-frothing skills could use some work (note to self: practice makes perfect!), the result was still delicious. I love how this simple drink has become such an iconic part of Australian culture. Now that I know how to make it, I might just have to swap out my usual drip coffee for a flat white every once in a while!
