Although the first dish in my “5 Avocado Dishes from 5 Countries” series is Mexican, it is not guacamole! Instead, I’ve chosen from among submissions a sweet, refreshing, delicate dessert centered around the beloved avocado, and I’m thrilled to share it with you. In the States, people often use avocados very strictly in certain savory dishes. In other regions around the world, avocados are wonderful additions to sweet desserts or foods with smooth textures, like pudding. This recipe is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with the versatility of the avocado!

In Mexican cuisine, avocado is a staple included in dishes of all kinds. If you are used to Western cooking, using avocado in sweet foods might sound odd to you. However, I beg you to give it a chance! In this particular recipe for avocado ice pops, the avocado shines alongside whipping cream and condensed milk. Known as paletas de aguacate in Mexico, these pops are usually found in artisan ice cream shops. In fact, this exotic ice pop flavor was originally created for ice cream festivals and fairs to draw dessert lovers with a novel, unique flavor. It is now a traditional delicacy, and Eduardo from Mexico City was kind enough to share his favorite paletas de aguacate recipe with us.

When Eduardo was little, his mother would make and sell these ice pops for some extra income. I’m sure they sold very well, as my final paletas de aguacate dish turned out beautifully. The condensed milk is delightfully sweet, and the avocado provides a subtle earthy flavor. I did add some milk to the mixture before freezing it, as it seemed too thick. You can easily gauge this as you stir the mix, which will make removing the ice pops from their molds much easier.

Overall, I find paletas de aguacate to be sweet, creamy, and refreshing. This is the perfect recipe to try if you like avocado and are in the mood for something notably different from ice cream or fruit pops. It is so easy to make, and it’s such a fun way to eat avocado if you’re only familiar with it as a savory addition. I loved paletas de aguacate, and, as Eduardo states, you won’t regret trying these!
