PB&J Hot Dog

When Rory first showed me the Cartoon Dog, I thought it was a joke — one bite in, I was a convert.

The Cartoon Dog is proof that American hot dog culture has no limits. Part sandwich, part dessert, this playful creation take a classic all-beef frank and dresses it up with peanut butter, grape jelly, and a crunchy cereal topping — turning a backyard staple into something that looks (and tastes) like it jumped straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon.

Hot dogs have always been a canvas for regional creativity in the U.S. Chicago has its “drag through the garden” style loaded with relish and sport peppers. Seattle tops theirs with cream cheese. New York keeps it classic with mustard and sauerkraut. The Cartoon Dog fits into this long tradition of only in America hot dog innovation, but pushes it into whimsical, kid-at-heart territory by borrowing from another all-American icon: the peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

The magic starts with a toasted kolache or brioche bun, chosen for its slightly sweet, pillowy texture. A 100% beef frank, wrapped in crispy bacon, forms the savory base. Then comes the twist: a generous layer of creamy peanut butter spun around the dog, followed by spoonfuls of grape jelly. The finishing touch is a shower of Cap’n Crunch Peanut Butter cereal, adding crunch and a nostalgic, almost dessert-like sweetness.

Sweet, salty, smoky, and crunchy all in one bite, the Cartoon Dog captures the spirit of American food culture: bold, playful, and never afraid to reinvent a classic.
