Sarah’s favorite way to eat toast was totally surprising to me, but no less delicious!

Austrian Überbackener Toast mit Crème Fraîche, or “Gratinated Toast with Crème Fraîche,” is a cozy, savory dish that brings comfort and flavor to the table. Popular in Austrian kitchens and cafes, this open-faced toast starts with a slice of hearty bread, generously spread with a creamy mix of crème fraîche, finely chopped pickles, peppers, and ham. The creamy, tangy base balances beautifully with the salty ham and bright, briny pickles. Once assembled, the toast is baked until golden brown and bubbling, creating a warm, melty topping with just the right amount of crunch from the edges.

Perfect for brunch, lunch, or even a light dinner, Überbackener Toast mit Crème Fraîche is easy to make and endlessly satisfying. It’s a great way to use up leftover ingredients and turns simple pantry staples into something special. This Austrian gratin-style toast has earned its place as a comforting crowd-pleaser that’s fast, flavorful, and filling. Whether you’re exploring Austrian cuisine, searching for new toast recipes, or looking for an oven-baked dish with European flair, this savory toast delivers both in taste and texture. Try it for your next cozy meal idea!
