Mozzarella in Carrozza: A Delicious Italian Delight

Mozzarella in Carrozza is a classic Italian dish that brings together the creamy goodness of mozzarella cheese and the comforting flavors of fried bread. Originating from the southern regions of Italy, particularly Campania and Naples, this indulgent treat has gained popularity worldwide for its irresistible taste and texture. Whether enjoyed as a snack, appetizer, or a light meal, Mozzarella in Carrozza is sure to satisfy cheese lovers everywhere.

What is Mozzarella in Carrozza?

Mozzarella in Carrozza translates to “mozzarella in a carriage” in Italian, referring to the way the cheese is enveloped between slices of bread. This dish typically consists of fresh mozzarella cheese sandwiched between two slices of bread, which are then dipped in an egg mixture and fried until golden brown. The result is a crispy, crunchy exterior that gives way to the gooey, melted mozzarella inside.

Key Ingredients

The main ingredients in Mozzarella in Carrozza include:

  1. Mozzarella Cheese: Fresh mozzarella is essential for this dish, providing a creamy and stretchy texture when melted.
  2. Bread: Thick slices of bread, often Italian or ciabatta, are used to encase the cheese.
  3. Eggs: Beaten eggs are used to coat the bread, creating a crispy crust when fried.
  4. Flour: Some recipes call for a light dusting of flour to help the egg adhere to the bread.
  5. Oil: Olive oil or vegetable oil is used for frying, adding flavor and richness to the dish.

Preparation Method

Making Mozzarella in Carrozza is simple and rewarding:

  1. Prepare the Bread: Start by cutting fresh mozzarella into slices and placing them between two slices of bread. For added flavor, you can sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper on the cheese.
  2. Coat the Sandwiches: Beat eggs in a bowl and add a little flour if desired. Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated.
  3. Heat the Oil: In a frying pan, heat oil over medium heat until hot but not smoking.
  4. Fry the Sandwiches: Carefully place the coated sandwiches in the hot oil. Fry until golden brown and crispy on both sides, usually about 3-4 minutes per side.
  5. Drain and Serve: Remove the sandwiches from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot, optionally with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.
