6 Things to Order off a Swedish Menu

When the Sunday scaries hit and I don’t have the energy to do anything but order take out, I never think to myself “You know what I’m craving? Swedish food”. But maybe I should! After all, Swedish cuisine is so much more than pickled fish and meatballs. So I called for the help of my subscribers and they were able to help me order off a Swedish restaurant menu like a true local. Read on to see what they said!

1. Raggmunk med Fläsk och Lingonsylt (Potato Cake with Bacon & Lingonberry Jam)

“Sweden used to be a very poor country, so we have a long history of these very simple and hearty foods that make up our classic cuisine.” – Henrik

2. Smörgåsbord Platter

“This platter contains one of my favorite foods, Jansson’s Temptation, and this is a potato casserole that has Swedish anchovies in it. This is a very savory and salty dish. It’s also very creamy and I would not feel that it is Christmas without it.” – Anna

“Gravlax is made by applying salt and sugar to the [salmon] and then traditionally burying it in dirt. Nowadays, we don’t do that. We just put it in the fridge.” – Robyn

“Another very Swedish thing on this platter is of course the pickled herring. When you’re new to herring, some people find the texture a bit challenging, and if you do I recommend you try it with some potato.” – Anna

“Of course we can’t forget the Swedish meatballs. This is not just an Ikea dish, we actually do eat it and enjoy it. This is something that you have often. My grandmother would make this at least once a week for the whole family.” – Henrik

3. Potatis och Purjolökssoppa (Potato & Leek Soup)

“I think the beauty in this really lies in the texture. When done correctly, it is velvety smooth, thick, and I think it tastes like sitting inside during autumn and you need something comforting.” – Robyn

4. Gubbröra (Gentleman's Delight)

“It’s a fancy egg salad with herring or anchovies in it. This is a very savory dish. It’s usually served on rye bread and you would have it for celebratory occasions.” Anna

5. Kladdkaka (Sticky Chocolate Cake)

“The closest thing I could compare it to is a brownie, but it’s absolutely not a brownie. This is such a common thing to see in Swedish cafes, restaurants, and most people know how to make this one.” – Robyn

6. Våffla med Grädde och Sylt (Waffle with Cream & Jam)

“In Sweden, we have a special day or holiday for pretty much every sweet treat. And we have waffle day! Swedish waffles are quite thin and crispy and you serve them with some kind of berry jam.” – Anna

And that’s just scratching the surface! My subscribes also recommended trying Räkmacka (Shrimp Sandwich) and Brisket with Smashed Turnip. So know we all really know that Swedish cuisine really spans beyond just the stereotypical Ikea meatballs (while they are delicious). I hope this inspires you to try Swedish food next time you’re wanting to switch up your delivery night routine!

Palestine is so much more than what we’ve all been hearing about recently in the news. It is a beautiful culture with an incredibly diverse cuisine. With the help of my subscribers of Palestinian descent, I was able to learn more about the beauty of  Palestinian culture what this vibrant cuisine is made up of.
