GUATEMALA
If you consider yourself to be a “more is more” kind of person, then do I have a hot dog for you. In my latest series, I asked my wonderful subscribers to send me ideas on how people from around the world eat hot dogs. So far, this Guatemalan hot dog might just be the messiest submission, but also one of the best.
The submission itself comes from Valesca, who is from Florida in the United States, but is also a proud first generation Guatemalan immigrant. Her recipe for Shucos Guataltecos, or Guatemalan style hot dogs, comes from her parents and can now be enjoyed by everyone.
If you’re familiar with the Spanish language, you might be wondering about the word “Shucos” and how exactly it relates to hot dogs. Well, “Shucos” actually translates to “dirty,” but is more akin to a slang word for “hot mess” or “chaotic.” So don’t worry – there’s nothing dirty about these hot dogs. However, you might end up feeling a little dirty after devouring your own Shucos Guatemaltecos.
To build a Guatemalan style hot dog, you of course begin with a grilled hot dog and a grilled bun. Valesca claims that a layer of guacamole is the mandatory next step, but the rest of the toppings are totally up to you. Common toppings can include slices of jalapeños, chimichurri, pico de Gallo, queso fresco, ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard, cilantro, and a style of cabbage that resembles sauerkraut. You can choose your own adventure with these hot dogs and pick any combination of toppings that catches your interest. Although, if you’re a person in Guatemala who takes their hot dogs seriously, then you order it “con todo,” meaning to load up each and every ingredient onto the hot dog.
So, I decided to be serious about my Shucos Guatemaltecos and prepared it with all of the fixings. I know that it might seem like way too much all together or like these things really shouldn’t go together, but it actually all works beautifully. There are so many flavors ranging from sweet, salty, spicy, and even sour – truly everything you could ever want to taste and then some. Shucos Guatemaltecos are for anyone looking for a little bit of wonderful, delicious chaos in their hot dogs.
